Steve Field becomes first GP chief inspector

Published on: 29/08/13

Health services watchdog the Care Quality Commission has appointed Professor Steve Field as its first chief inspector of general practice.

Field, a former chair of the Royal College of GPs, will leave his current position as deputy national medical director at NHS England.

The new role at the non-departmental public body was announced in May as part of a wider government push for heightened scrutiny of healthcare provision.

Field’s responsibilities will include introducing a rating system to guide the assessment of registered primary care providers, and ensuring health and social care services operate harmoniously.

Field said the new post was an “opportunity to highlight what’s good in general practice and dentistry, and to shine a light on what isn’t.”
