The Department of Health has appointed Tim Irish as a non-executive director of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

Joining from April and for a three-year term, Irish takes much experience to the UK drug watchdog having worked for 30 years in the healthcare industry, both in the UK and abroad.

From 2012 to 2015 he was chairman of the board of directors of Nexstim - a medical tech company that focusses on rehabilitation for stroke patients. He was also global head of marketing and strategy for Phillips Medical and a vice president for GE Medical in Europe.

On his appointment Irish says: "This is a fascinating time to join NICE. It plays a hugely important role in helping the NHS and social care organisations to deliver the best care available. I hope my experience working in the healthcare industry will bring a valuable perspective.ā€

NICE chief executive David Haslam adds: ā€œI am delighted to welcome Tim Irish to the NICE board. His extensive experience at healthcare companies will be highly valuable. Iā€™m sure he will play a key part in helping NICE to lead the way in encouraging high-quality care for all across the health and social care sectors.ā€
