The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) has said GlaxoSmithKline’s Dr Adrian Cottrell will join as the institute’s new Chief Information Officer.

In his new role Dr Cottrell will lead the institute’s information and communication technologies as the academic research organisation sets up a new and innovative IT infrastructure for research.

As one of the worlds’ leading academic organisations conducting research into cancer the ICR is a pioneer of big data, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI).

In his new role, Dr Cottrell – who is currently Vice President of Clinical, Medical and Regulatory Technology at GSK – will lead the institute in developing its information and communication capabilities to support the ICR’s full spectrum of research.

Dr Cottrell will work closely with Professor Bissan Al-Lazikani in enhancing the ICR’s abilities to use technology in the detection treatment and prevention of cancer.

Dr Cottrell brings to the role three decades worth of experience at the firm that was to later become GlaxoSmithKline.

Having graduated with a PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Leeds, Dr Cottrell joined Glaxo as a programmer in 1989.

Over 30 years, Dr Cottrell took on roles of increasing seniority in the IT departments of Glaxo, which later became GlaxoWellcome and then GlaxoSmithKline.

Notably Dr Cottrell oversaw the integration of GSK Japan into the wider organisation while also ensuring the successful delivery of one of the largest pharmacovigilance solutions in the industry.

Commenting on his own appointment, Dr Adrian Cottrell said: “The ICR has a fantastic reputation for making discoveries that improve the lives of people with cancer. I am excited to be joining the ICR team at this pivotal time, when the reliance on digital technologies to drive developments in research and healthcare has never been greater. I look forward to working together with the ICR team to support our mission to make the discoveries that defeat cancer.”

Dr Charmaine Griffiths, Chief Operating Officer of The Institute of Cancer Research, London, said: “We are delighted to have Dr Cottrell join us as Chief Information Officer and know he will lead the team to meet the changing and complex needs of our researcher community. His expertise and outstanding track record mean he will be a great addition to the team.”
