Bristol-Myers Squibb’s external affairs director Richard Marsh has moved to PR agency Fleishman-Hillard, where he takes up the role of director and partner in regional healthcare.

He is a former special adviser to two Secretaries of State for Health in the last Conservative Government, as well as a special adviser with experience of two other government departments and a former speechwriter for Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major.

At BMS he served as director of external affairs and market access for the company’s UK pharmaceuticals business, a role he held from 2002.

While at the pharma company he built and led an integrated team of nearly 50-strong, dealing with all aspects of market access including health economics, policy and product communications.

Richard said: “This is a time of enormous challenge and change, from the Obama-inspired reforms in the US to a health service in the UK facing years of spending squeeze and cultural shock.

“Plus there is the strong possibility of a new Conservative government whose priorities may be stated but whose policies in detail, if they exist at all, are concealed in some very secure room. For any organisation interacting with the NHS in particular, the ingenuity required to unlock opportunity will be enormous”.

This will be Richard’s second spell at Fleishman-Hillard, having previously led the company’s UK healthcare public affairs team.

Based in Fleishman-Hillard’s offices in London, he will operate across the UK, Middle East and Africa region.
