EU referendum outcome will have major consequences for UK’s pharma sector - GlobalData

The outcome of today’s referendum on the UK’s continuing membership of the European Union (EU) will have major consequences for the country’s pharmaceutical and medical device sectors, according to research and consulting firm GlobalData.

For the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, a vote to leave would have significant consequences in five key areas including, regulatory impacts, research and development, access to talent, intellectual property rights, and market access.

UK pharma would benefit by remaining in EU, says ABPI

With the EU vote approaching, the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) has brought together 93 signatories, including the likes of GSK CEO Andrew Witty, in a letter supporting Britain’s continued membership of the European Union.

Senior figures from across the industry, including the CEOs of GSK, AstraZeneca, UCB Pharma and companies big and small from across the UK, support the letter published in the Observer. Along with the ABPI, the letter was written alongside the BioIndustry Association (BIA).

Remaining in the EU is vital for UK’s cancer research strength, say leading oncologists

Leading UK oncologists have written an article in the May issue of The Lancet, strongly urging Britain to remain in the EU as the alternative would severely damage cancer research and care.

They argue that the UK contributes substantially to EU cancer research funding, playing a central role in strengthening the research area as a whole, and benefits through research grants and by being involved in important multinational collaborations.
