Among the swirling storm emanating from the testimony of Donald Trump’s ex-lawyer Michael Cohen to the House Oversight Committee, one of the many controversial claims to arise is that pharma firm Novartis allegedly attempted to coax him the President’s “fixer” into lobbying government on its behalf.

The saga of Novartis’ ill-advised $1.2 million deal with US President Donald Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen continues to unfold as it emerges that company’s top legal figure, General Counsel Felix Ehrat, has retired from his role in response to the scandal.

Ehrat was a co-signatory on the $100,000-a-month deal. “Although the contract was legally in order, it was an error,” he commented – a sentiment echoed by Chief Executive Vasant Narasimhan, who has also called the deal a mistake, though has denied any direct involvement himself.

Novartis’ $1.2m payment to Trump’s lawyer raises more questions than answers

Novartis payment to President Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, had seemed fairly odd from the beginning – with many asking the same question, what was the company paying for?

In a statement, it tried to clarify why a payment as large as $1.2 million, up from the $400,000 previously revealed, over the course of the year was made to the lawyer, who has no background in healthcare, and his consultancy firm, Essential Consultants.
