MSD's Deepak Khanna to chair American Pharmaceutical Group

Merck Sharp and Dohme’s UK managing director Deepak Khanna has been appointed chairman of the American Pharmaceutical Group.

The APG is a trade association for the seven largest US research-based biopharmaceutical companies operating in the UK - Abbott, Amgen, BMS, Janssen, Lilly, MSD and Pfizer.

Deepak said: “We are going through a period of almost unprecedented policy change in the UK, including major NHS structural reform, a new medicines’ pricing system and the Cancer Drugs Fund.

A joint venture between the NHS, charities and the pharma sector has begun in Nottingham to help treat the city’s 12,800 diabetes sufferers.

NIMROD (Nottingham NHS and Industry Maximising Resources and Outcomes in Diabetes) brings together the NHS Nottingham City PCT, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Diabetes UK.

Also on board are seven pharma companies: AstraZeneca, Lilly UK, Novartis, Novo Nordisk, MSD, Sanofi-Aventis and Pfizer.

How did you find your way into your current role?

I was a cardiology registrar, in a post which included clinical trial work. I found the relationship with patients in trials more gratifying than that of routine clinical care.

MSD launches asthma training resources

A new training resource aimed at helping primary care nurses manage asthma has been launched with funding from Merck Sharp and Dohme.

The ASCEND (asthma skills, continued education and nurse development) programme is a five-module course written by nurses and accredited by the Royal College of Nurses.

Developed by representatives from Asthma UK, Education for Health, Primary Care Respiratory Society (PCRS) and Respiratory Education UK (REUK), its aim is to fill in knowledge gaps on the causes and management of asthma.
