Donald Trump nominates Dr Stephen Hahn as next FDA Commissioner

The US FDA could be set to receive its next long-term Commissioner after the White House revealed President Donald Trump’s top pick to lead the regulatory agency.

Dr Stephen Hahn was announced as the Commander-in-Chief’s nomination for the role. Dr Hahn most recently served as the Chief Medical Executive at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) in Houston, Texas since May 2018, a patient care organisation employing around 21,000 staff; the firm also generates over $5 billion annually and conducts “the largest number of clinical trials in the United States”.

Democrat Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren has criticised Scott Gottlieb for joining Pfizer.  

In a letter to Gottlieb, Senator Warren called on the former FDA commissioner to ‘reconsider’ his decision to join the US firm, as she suggested he should immediately resign.

Dr Scott Gottlieb, who stepped down from his role as the 23rd Commissioner of the FDA earlier this year, has been elected to the Board of Directors at US pharmaceutical firm Pfizer, effective immediately.

Alongside this appointment, Dr Gottlieb was also appointed to the Board’s Regulatory and Compliance Committee and the Science and Technology Committee.

National Cancer Institute Director Ned Sharpless to become interim FDA Commissioner

Following the surprise resignation of current FDA Commissioner Dr Scott Gottlieb a week earlier, Dr Norman ‘Ned’ Sharpless, Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), has been announced by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar as a temporary replacement to lead the FDA until a permanent Commissioner can be found.

The National Cancer Institute is a division of the National Institutes of Health, directing billions of federal funds and research grants. Dr Sharpless has led the organisation since October 2017.

Dr Scott Gottlieb, the 23rd Commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), stoked surprise throughout the industry with the announcement of his sudden resignation from the post in the first week of May.

The news comes after Gottlieb himself rubbished media reports in January that he was planning to leave the agency, and was broken by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, who said in a statement: "All of us at HHS are proud of the remarkable work Commissioner Gottlieb has done at the FDA.

FDA launch plan to tackle e-cig epidemic

The FDA have announced a plan to crack down on the so-called ‘e-cig epidemic’, following revelations that vaping and use of e-cigarettes has become widespread among school aged American teenagers.

FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb was forthright in suggesting that e-cigarette use had reached crisis level proportions as he said in a statement that: “Unfortunately, I now have good reason to believe that it’s reached nothing short of an epidemic proportion of growth.”
