NHS Chief Simon Stevens: Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop poses "considerable risks to health"

NHS Chief Executive Simon Stevens has gone head-to-head with Hollywood actor and “wellness guru” Gwyneth Paltrow, taking aim at her wellness empire Goop in a speech at an event in Oxford.

The health service’s top man warned against the “considerable risks to health” posed by the often unregulated and unproven health products marketed by Goop. He condemned celebrities and other figures like Paltrow peddling these “too good to be true” health cures, denouncing them as “snake oil salesmen”.

NHS chief warns of rise of anti-vaccine 'fake news' online

The head of NHS England has warned that ‘vaccination deniers’ are increasing their influence on social media through ’fake news’.

Speaking at a health summit organised by the Nuffield Trust, Simon Stevens, the Chief Executive of NHS England, said that a parent at his daughter’s own primary school had used WhatsApp to express concerns about her children’s immune system being ‘loaded up’ with vaccines.

“My kids aren’t vulnerable and I think loading up on vaccines blocks their systems from fighting disease as it should do,” the WhatsApp message said.

NHS England seals access deals with big pharma for breast cancer and MS

NHS England has entered into a commercial agreement with Merck which aims to provide access to innovative treatments for both multiple sclerosis and breast cancer, it has emerged. As part of the agreement with two major pharma firms, Merck’s multiple sclerosis treatment Mavenclad (cladribine tablets) will be made available to hundreds of patients effective 10 November, while an agreement in principle has been reached on the availability of Roche’s Perjeta (pertuzumab) by unlocking the final stage of NICE’s appraisal. 

Government pledges ‘new era’ for NHS

The government is investing £200 million to back healthcare professionals to implement their own ideas for improving patient care.

The transformation fund, which was first mooted in Simon Stevens’ Five Year Forward View for the NHS in October, will create 29 ‘vanguard’ sites across England.

NHS plans bashed over cancer and heart disease

Hundreds of healthcare experts have signed an open letter to NHS chief executive Simon Stevens calling for him to scrap reduced funding plans due in April.

According to the Telegraph newspaper, not reversing the plans would mean patients with cancer and heart disease will suffer 'needless deaths'.

Under the controversial proposals hospitals that provide dedicated care to more patients than expected will only be reimbursed for half of the cost of each extra case.

The new boss of NHS England has warned that he will not be able to fix its problems and said the NHS must look to other countries’ health systems for some answers.

In a robust speech chief executive Simon Stevens, who was poached from a US healthcare provider and is a former advisor to Labour prime minister Tony Blair, says: “For the NHS the stakes have never been higher. I know times are tough, and the health service is under pressure.”

A group of influential MPs has raised serious concerns over what the £10 billion worth of NHS England savings made over the past two years has been spent on.

The NHS in England has been charged with making £20 billion in savings over a four-year period, with the money expected to be reinvested into front-line care and making services more productive.

So far more than £10 billion has been saved in the first two years with another £4 billion forecast for 2013-14.
