Lonza, a Swiss multinational chemical and biotechnology company, has opened a new manufacturing facility in Basel, where their headquarters is based. The new Drug Product Services laboratory is 1,300 square meters in size and will focus upon formulation development, drug product analytical development and quality control.
The facility will particularly focus upon the analysis of particles in a drug product to gauge possible impurities and testing of drug containers to measure efficiency to keep out contaminants.
The facility adds to Lonza’s already existing 11 manufacturing facilities. The move to expand their manufacturing capabilities comes on the back of news in August to acquire US-company InterHealth Nutraceuticals for $300 million and Triangle Research Labs in June, for an undisclosed sum, as part of a wider acquisition strategy.
Richard Ridinger, CEO of Lonza, commented of the opening of the site: “We chose Basel for Lonza’s first-ever drug product development facility because it offers us access to the latest technologies and world-leading experts in a central location, one that’s a hub of innovation in the pharma industry.”
He added: “The addition of drug product development services to Lonza’s global offerings is the next part of our journey along the healthcare continuum, a step that moves us closer to our customers and their patients.”
