Shire has received planning permission for a new state-of-the-art biologics manufacturing facility in Co Meath, Ireland. The plant will be based on a 120 acre, green field site at Piercetown. The Dublin-based company expects the site to employ 400 people at the new plant.

The facility will use bioprocessing techniques to allow it to supply clinical and commercial scale products. The company predicts that production at the plant will begin sometime during 2019. During construction of the site, the construction of the site will also provide employment for a further 700 people.

“We are pleased to have met this important milestone as we move forward in preparation to start building our new manufacturing plant,” commented Tim Kelly, senior vice president of Biologics Operations at Shire. “This expansion of our manufacturing capability will help us to support even more patients with our innovative rare disease products and pipeline.
