With the 8 June general election only a month away, the EEF – The Manufacturer’s Organisation – has become the latest to vocalise their concerns and recommendations to the next UK government with the release of its manifesto, joining the ABPI, the UK BioIndustry Association and the Institution of Medical Engineers, who both recently did the same.

The manifesto Making the Future, Making Britain Great outlines a number of principles which call on whichever party emerges victorious in the upcoming election to capitalise on the recent upsurge in the country’s manufacturing performance and adhere to a dedicated strategy.

Among these principles, the manifesto urges the government to seal a Brexit deal which provides the benefits of the single market and keeps trade costs between the UK and Europe low. It also asks for an immigration system which gives employers access to skilled workers, a reduction in regulatory costs, and investment into digital technology and R&D initiatives.

“Manufacturing industry must be at the heart of any new government’s vision for a strong and successful economic plan for the UK,” remarked EEF Chief Executive Terry Scuoler. “Manufacturing firms across the UK represent the best of British business and they need to feel certain that government is backing them in the face of the complex process of leaving the EU.”

“As we prepare to navigate what will inevitably be choppy Brexit waters, a clear commitment to an industrial strategy will give business confidence that the government is capable of looking long-term at strengthening some of the fundamental levers of our economy,” he continued. “From boosting innovation and improving infrastructure to ensuring we have a clear education strategy for industry where schools and colleges are preparing young people with the skills they need for the future.”
