President Donald Trump has pledged to fight “the scourge of drug addiction,” as he outlined his commitment to the fight against drugs around the world.

The President spoke out at a meeting of the Global Call to Action on the World Drug Problem in the United Nations on Monday stating that: “The scourge of drug addiction continues to claim too many lives in the United States and in nations around the world. Today, we commit to fighting the drug epidemic together”

He continued in noting that: “Illicit drugs are linked to organized crime, illegal financial flows, corruption, and terrorism. It's vital for public health and national security that we fight drug addiction and stop all forms of trafficking and smuggling that provide the financial lifeblood for vicious transnational cartels.”

President Trump, whose brother Fred suffered from alcoholism and died at the age of 43, was praised by U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres for calling attention to the opioid crisis sweeping across America.

The UN secretary continued in encouraging cooperation between members in dismantling drug supply chains and treating the global problem of addiction.
