Ebola has spread to Uganda, according to the WHO.

A five year old boy has been infected with the Ebola virus in Uganda, marking the first confirmed case of Ebola in the landlocked East African state.

The infection comes amid a major outbreak in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

There have been more than 2,000 cases of Ebola in the Congo in the last ten months alone – the majority of which have killed those infected.

The five year old Ugandan boy was said to have travelled across the border to the DRC on Sunday 9 June.

The child is now in hospital as a Ugandan Ministry of Health and WHO rapid response team have been dispatched in an effort to identify others who may be at risk.

Uganda has already vaccinated 4,700 health workers in 165 facilities with MSD’s experimental Ebola vaccine.

Uganda’s Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng tweeted: “Uganda has been in preparedness mode ever since the #Ebola outbreak was declared in DRC.”

“Now, we move into response mode.”

“Please cooperate with our health, immigration and security officials to ensure effective screening to prevent spread of #Ebola to other parts of the country.”
