FDA warns Purell not to claim sanitizers prevent Ebola

The FDA has issued a warning letter to Purcell telling them to stop its misleading advertising of their sanitiser products.

The FDA says the Gojo Industries website, the parent company of Purcell, makes the claim the product can treat Ebola. They cite the Q&A section, and point to the question “is Purell advanced sanitizer effective against Ebola?”

The answer from the company says that Ebola is an “enveloped virus” which is killed by alcohol which is present in their sanitiser. The FDA says this statement “clearly indicate your suggestion that PURELL Healthcare Advanced Hand Sanitizers are intended for reducing or preventing disease from the Ebola virus, norovirus, and influenza.

“However, FDA is currently not aware of any adequate and well-controlled studies demonstrating that killing or decreasing the number of bacteria or viruses on the skin by a certain magnitude produces a corresponding clinical reduction in infection or disease caused by such bacteria or virus.”

Responding to the letter, Samantha Williams, the Senior Director of Gojo corporate communications, said it “took immediate action to respond to FDA claim requirements after receiving a warning letter from the agency.”
