The coronavirus outbreak that has infected notable figures of the Trump administration has spread to 34 White House Staffers and other contacts overall, according to an internal government memo.
The memo was distributed among Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) senior leadership on Wednesday and was obtained by ABC News.
The number of infected includes notable members of Trump’s inner circle, with the President and his wife both testing positive, as well as senior aides Hope Hicks and Stephen Miller as well as White House Press Secretary
Kayleigh McEnany. It is speculated the super-spreader event was a Rose Garden celebration for Supreme Court Justice nominee Amy Coney Barrett. The outbreak infected many who don’t work with the President day to day, with confirmed positive tests being announced for former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Senators Mike Lee, Thom Tillis and Ron Johnson, University of Notre Dame President John Jenkins, and Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.
In response to the outbreak, Alyssa Farah, the Communications Director for the Whie House, said that it was taking precautions to make the building COVID-19 secure. However, recent images have shown White House aides interacting closely with one another without masks. President Trump also returned to the Oval Office on Tuesday, with a video showing him quickly removing his mask while posing for photos on a White House balcony. This followed him tweeting that Americans should not be afraid of the virus.
The White House has also decided not to trace the contacts of the people who attended the Rose Garden event on 26 September.
