Coronavirus infection rates across England are levelling off after a slight decrease in cases last week, according to the Office of National Statistics.

The group estimated that 633,000 people in private households in England had COVID-19 between 15 and 21 November, around 1.16% of the population. This is down from 664,700 the previous week, or 1.22% of the population.

This is the first drop in case numbers since early September. The figures however, do not include the people staying in hospitals, care homes or other institutions. The recent ONS survey is based on 712,000 tests gathered from households across the last six weeks.

Ruth Studley, Head of Analysis for the COVID-19 Infection Survey, said: “At a national level in England, the overall number of infections appears to be levelling off at around one in 85 people who would test positive in the community.”

Rates have increased in the East Midlands, but decreased in the North West, while infection rates are down in West Midlands, East of England, London, South East and South West.

In terms of age groups, it has fallen for young children and for young adults.
