Digital Pharma: Byte-sized roundup

The ABPI this week became the latest pharma industry body to launch an official Twitter account, @ABPI_APS.

It’s the voice of the UK association’s Director (Trust) Andy Powrie-Smith, who leads the ABPI’s ‘trust imperative’. This is a central part of its plans for the future and aims “to create a new contract between industry and society based on openness and trust”.

Other industry bodies that have taken to the micro-blogging platform include EFPIA (Europe), BIA (UK), LEEM (France) and PhRMA (US).

An international week of action against illegal online medicine sales resulted in 72 websites taken down and almost 167,000 tablets seized.

Operation PANGEA II saw Interpol and the World Health Organization coordinate action in 26 countries last week to target websites selling counterfeit and illicit medicines

Some 750 websites were identified as being engaged in illegal activity, including offering controlled or prescription-only drugs.

Last week the UK Digital Economy Bill was officially added to the government’s legislative programme for the next session of Parliament.

The Department for Business Innovation and Skills has set up a comprehensive blog collecting information on the Bill, including factsheets, FAQs and other documents, and linking to their social media presences on Twitter, YouTube and Flickr.

Finally, there’s still time to nominate a colleague or client for the PM Society’s first Digital Media Pioneer award. This will recognise the person who has contributed most to their company’s development in the digital media arena during 2009.

Nominations will close next week for the prize, which will then be presented at the Society’s annual Advertising Awards shindig on 29 January 2010. You can nominate via the Digital Awards website.
