A new UK centre specialising in research into cardiovascular disease has opened its doors at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London.

The International Centre for Circulatory Health (ICCH) is a joint venture between St Mary's Hospital and Imperial College London and has Sanofi-Aventis as a major sponsor.

The centre brings together internationally renowned scientists and clinicians to work on new research into cardiovascular health problems, the leading cause of death worldwide.

Neil Poulter, Professor of Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine, ICCH said: "The International Centre for Circulatory Health has been created to provide a centre of excellence with an integrated research strategy in the field of circulatory medicine, and to apply the results of scientific endeavour to advance standards of care in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. We are very grateful to Sanofi-Aventis UK for the generous financial contribution which we believe will help us achieve this goal."

Sanofi-Aventis was recently created from a merger to become the world's third largest pharmaceutical company, and has a significant presence in the cardiovascular field. The company will provide a substantial annual grant to the centre for an initial three-year period.

Nigel Brooksby, managing director of Sanofi-Aventis UK, said the company prided itself on its expertise in the field, its research producing life-saving medicines, concluding: "Sanofi-Aventis UK is delighted to be committing support to the valuable work of the ICCH, which will help reduce the increasing global burden of cardiovascular disease."
