UK pharma industry association the ABPI has named GSK’s UK general manager Simon Jose its next president.

He will take over the role from AstraZeneca’s Chris Brinsmead on 28 April, serving for a one-year term with the option of re-election for a further 12 months.

“I am pleased to have the opportunity to represent our industry in the UK at such an important time for the pharmaceutical sector,” he said.

“The UK Government has recognised the importance of the life science industry – it is both an engine of growth to support economic recovery and a continuing source of new medicines and vaccines to help the NHS deliver improved health during a time of limited resources. Against this backdrop, the industry itself is going through a period of considerable and rapid change.”

Simon has been a member of the ABPI Board of Management since May 2008 and leads GSK’s UK pharmaceuticals business

He began his career with the company in 1986, and subsequently held various sales and marketing roles of increasing seniority, both in Europe and North America, before assuming his current role in February 2008.
